Memory, trauma, and identity in contemporary english literature

Abstract

Contemporary English literature frequently explores the interconnected themes of memory, trauma, and identity to examine how individuals and communities respond to personal and historical experiences. Novelists and poets investigate the psychological effects of war, migration, displacement, violence, colonialism, and family conflict while illustrating the role of memory in shaping identity. This paper analyzes the significance of these themes in contemporary English literature and demonstrates how literary narratives provide insight into healing, resilience, and cultural remembrance. It argues that literature serves as an important medium for preserving memory, confronting trauma, and reconstructing individual and collective identities.
