Victorian Literature and the Changing Social Order

Abstract

Victorian literature reflects the profound economic, political, and cultural transformations that reshaped nineteenth-century Britain. This paper examines how Victorian writers responded to industrialization, urbanization, class divisions, gender roles, education, and moral values. Through novels, poetry, and social criticism, authors exposed inequality while advocating compassion and reform. The study argues that Victorian literature not only documented social change but also influenced public opinion by encouraging readers to reflect on justice, responsibility, and human dignity.
