Abstract

The growing emphasis on social inclusion, equal opportunity, and human rights has significantly influenced contemporary architectural practice, leading to increased attention toward the development of accessible and inclusive built environments. Public buildings and urban spaces play a vital role in ensuring equitable access to education, healthcare, transportation, government services, recreation, and cultural activities for people of all ages and abilities. However, many existing public facilities continue to present physical, sensory, and cognitive barriers that restrict independent participation, particularly for persons with disabilities, older adults, children, and individuals with temporary mobility limitations. Universal Design has emerged as a comprehensive architectural approach that seeks to eliminate these barriers by creating environments that are usable, safe, and convenient for everyone without requiring specialized adaptation or separate design solutions. the application of Universal Design principles in public architecture with particular emphasis on enhancing accessibility and promoting inclusive built environments. the theoretical foundations, core principles, and practical implementation of Universal Design across public buildings, transportation facilities, educational institutions, healthcare centers, government offices, parks, and recreational spaces. The study discusses key design considerations including equitable use, flexibility in use, simple and intuitive design, perceptible information, tolerance for error, low physical effort, and appropriate size and space for approach and use. the contribution of digital technologies such as Building Information Modeling (BIM), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), smart navigation systems, and intelligent building management in improving accessibility planning and facility management.
