Emerging Applications of Synthetic Biology

Synthetic biology combines principles from biology, engineering, genetics, and computational science to design or redesign biological systems for useful purposes. Advances in DNA synthesis, genome editing, metabolic engineering, automation, and computational design have expanded the field beyond conventional genetic modification toward programmable biological systems. Emerging applications include sustainable biomanufacturing, engineered microorganisms, therapeutic development, cell-based technologies, agriculture, environmental remediation, biomaterials, and biosensing. The field is increasingly focused on designing biological functions with greater predictability while addressing challenges related to biological complexity, containment, safety, regulation, and responsible innovation. This paper examines nine major application areas and considers the technological, environmental, and societal factors shaping the future of synthetic biology.
