Gender representation has emerged as a significant theme in contemporary Indian literature, reflecting changing social realities and evolving gender roles. This study examines how male and female characters are portrayed in modern Indian literary works across different languages and genres. It focuses on issues such as identity, power relations, patriarchy, marginalization, and resistance. The study highlights how contemporary writers challenge traditional gender stereotypes and give voice to women’s experiences, emotions, and struggles. Female characters are increasingly depicted as independent, assertive, and self-aware, while male characters are also shown grappling with changing expectations and vulnerabilities. The paper also explores the representation of marginalized genders and the role of literature in questioning rigid gender binaries. By analyzing selected literary texts, the study demonstrates how literature acts as a mirror of society and a medium for social critique. It concludes that contemporary Indian literature plays a crucial role in promoting gender sensitivity, encouraging dialogue, and contributing to broader movements for gender equality and social justice.
